Leo Salloum grew up on donair. That’s not hyperbole, either: The owner and manager at Tony’s Donair took over the family business from his father, who launched the pioneering donair shop at the corner of Robie and Cunard Streets back in 1976. “It’s the family legacy that keeps me motivated,” he told Dalhousie’s alumni news. “I like to say that you’ll always remember your first kiss and you’ll always remember your first Tony’s Donair!” Along with years of experience, Tony’s has built a community of customers who just can’t get enough of its juicy meat and grilled-to-perfection pita. Almost every food establishment in the city has its own spin on a donair or a donair-inspired dish, but Tony’s remains the go-to spot for locals and tourists—whether it’s 2pm or 2am.
