I had to leave Halifax because I could not afford to live there. I had a decent professional job with full benefits and pension. I worked in the arts sector and made about $50,000 a year—not bad for mid-level position with a non-profit in NS (my counterparts in Ottawa made $70,000 a year for the same job). No matter, I thought that I could start “Adulting”, stay in my home province and build a life here.
Well, after student loan payments, I realized that I couldn’t afford the hefty $1200 -and-up a month which most one-bedroom rental units costs in this city. That was almost half a month’s net salary. (The taxes are pretty high here!) Landlords are now Air BnB hosts. I realized in this context, I would never be able to live without roommates, afford a car (and park it!) or save for a down payment on a property of my own. I worked hard to gain a promotion—I made a case for a raise. But the job scene is tough here and no matter how talented you are, there are limited positions which pay well and there are Baby Boomers who aren’t retiring.
My only choice was to either find a partner who could share expenses with me (but you can’t rush love!) or move away. So now I live “out west.”
The extra money I earn and the lower cost of living have made a big difference in my quality of life. I no longer feel like I’m living like a dirt poor student with the responsibilities of a professional job. There are opportunities for career growth, promotions and lower taxes. Finally, I can enjoy the fruits of my labour. “Adulting” is nice—but I sure do miss my family in Nova Scotia.
I don’t miss roommates and poverty and worry about having no financial future.
What’s to be done NS?

My neighbours and I haven't had heat or hot water in three days thanks to our piece-of-shit slumlord who lets the oil tank run dry. I think he does this on purpose every now and then to save money. No tenants can use heat or hot water for a week, probably saving him a lot of money. Heat and hot water is included in the lease. I suggest you fill the fucking tank, asshole, before we make a group complaint with the tenancy board. If our rent was late, you'd sure make sure you show up on time. This bastard never does any repairs either, but pulls up in a BMW and takes many trips to Greece thoughout the year. Buck up or be sued.

Since moving to downtown Dartmouth, I sure don't find the people to be very friendly here. One day, while walking home, I noticed a man slumped over a wall in front of the drugstore. I wondered if he was okay and looked back to check. My concern was met with an irate woman who was standing a few feet away. She started yelling at me, calling me a "fat bitch" for "checking out her man".
"Why would anyone be trying to pick up someone who looks half dead on the sidewalk, unless it was to get him medical attention?" I replied. "Nobody is interested in your man. Relax." But she kept screaming, even calling me a "faggot" in her utter rage. I guess you're insecure and so that's why you felt the need to insult another woman's body.
Then, I go to get on an elevator in a building in the neighbourhood and I notice there's already a guy inside. He's busy texting on his cell phone. I walk on the elevator. He looks up and says, "after you, white man" before walking off. I reply, "I am a native woman".
No wonder citizens don't stop to help other citizens anymore. If you fall on the ice in winter, don't be surprised when no one stops to help you up. You never know if someone is going to appreciate it, or if they're going to go ballistic on you for no reason! You just can risk engaging with anyone anymore. There are just too many junkies, antisocials and psychos in this town. Just know that I will defend myself against these verbal attacks every chance I get and will defend myself against physical ones as well with a swift take-down maneuver.

Why the fuck isn't the city doing the road work at night, like all of Europe does?

Use your turn indicators well before your turn and stop wearing your ball caps backwards or to the side.

Why are you making it so difficult for me to rent with you? I'm a 30-year-old professional with a full-time job. I'm a non-smoker with excellent credit and no pets. The only time I spend at home is to eat and sleep. In other words, I'm literally your ideal candidate. Yet most of you won't even reply to my initial inquiry! And if you do, you're only available for viewings during business hours! Who are you trying to rent to? The unemployed? If it's this difficult to get initial contact with you, what's going to happen if I encounter a problem with my place? Who do you think pays your mortgage? Why doesn't anybody return my call? I give up. All of you suck.

We live in Nova Scotia where we have a medical school and not enough doctors. It is sickening to me to think I have wanted to become a doctor my whole life (one that remains in this province) and it is simply a matter of being able to afford to do it. Education for the guarantee of a doctor remaining in province seems like a good way to fix our situation.

I grew up in PEI and we have always had a running joke about how crappy Island radio is. Seems as if all of the channels don't play anything newer than 1992 and even then, it's all the same songs over and over.
Up until a few months ago, I would always at least be able to count on a bit of variety here in Halifax when driving to work, but with some recent changes to the stations here, things are actually better on the Island with it's two radio stations. At least then I don't have to hear nothing but '80s hair metal and Phil Collins. Luckily, we have that one other station that can be counted on playing four Maroon 5 songs in one hour.

Instead of cheering on people to mindlessly hate a group of others branded with this term by their enemies, just encourage everyone to type "drs questioning vaccines" into a search engine and see what comes up. There is no cheering section idiocy needed when complex questions and serious injuries are happening.

Okay, people: READ THE FUCKING SIGNS. "Door is locked, please use buzzer" does not translate to "pull hard on the door until you break it." End of rant.
