The only way to fix this mess with the teachers is to send it to arbitration. The government and the union would identify the key compensation issues—wages, long service award and retirement health benefits and then establish a floor and ceiling for potential choices for the arbitrator. For example, the parties could agree to having an arbitrator choose a wage increase somewhere between a half percent to one percent per year. The arbitrator could choose between $0 for a long service award or up to $800 a year for years of service. The arbitrator could choose between $0 and $300 a year for teachers to pay health benefits. They should bracket the arbitration, get on with it and get a fair settlement by an independent third party operating under mutually agreed parameters/constraints. —The I want a fair solution person

I would like to thank the driver of my bus for serving some moral justice to a jaywalker this morning. This woman was in such a rush to catch the bus that she darted out in the middle of the road, causing the driver to slam on the brakes. The woman was still running to catch up when we got to the next stop, but the driver shut the door on her after letting the other passengers on. Keep fighting the good fight bus driver! —Everyday passenger

Almost witnessed a death on Barrington the other day, not by a rogue lightning strike or a horde of vicious vermin that run rampant downtown, but by careless acceleration of your imported automobile. If that young women wasn't paying attention while stepping out onto the crosswalk, or didn't hear you push that engine to speeds of 70-80km/h through what we know to be one of, if not the busiest street in Halifax, she would've most definitely been killed or seriously injured.

Luckily for you the authorities had their back turned to your little stunt like many others, and furthermore to an issue that needs to be addressed. After witnessing what happens to a community after losing a youth to reckless driving early last summer, I know that more has to be done by the HRP and the RCMP than just setting up a couple more check points every month, because even after a horrific accident occurs due to this nonsense, people just don't learn. And I know it's as much the driver's responsibility to drive safe as it is the job of the police to ensure tragedies like this don't happen again, but if nothing is done then incidents like this will be bound to repeat themselves until something changes. —Stricter laws

I feel intense fear and sadness for the hatred and discrimination other people face. Seeing the bans in the US, the decriminalization of family violence in Russia. The future seems dismal and dark. Here I am, all shiny and white. I want to be your ally. I want you to know I don't want you to face a moment of hatred. I stand for you, with you, beside you. I do not give a shit about your religion, what you look like. I care if you are a good person. Kind, loving and that you make our country better. I care that you are inclusive. That you respect those around you. That you share your story. I am sorry I don't fully understand. I am sorry because I am white I just don't get it. But please know I try and please know from the bottom of my heart, I want equality. —Shiny

I can't believe the gall of this government. First they stab the teachers in the back by publicly raising the issue of the professional development trips taken abroad during collective bargaining, then they try to portray themselves as caring deeply about the education system while at the same time undermining those people who work in it day in and day out.

Quite frankly the only skill these people bring to the game is the appalling use of dirty tricks to serve their own purpose and to hell with the consequences. Shame on them. –Citizen appalled at the government

To the police officer who almost ran me over in a CROSSWALK the other day, what the hell?! I was in the middle of the crosswalk, with the flashers flashing and you just blew through it. Maybe you should follow the rules you're supposed to enforce. —Lucky to be alive

Let's talk? It sounds good but nobody will listen. You let your employees bully new staff and turn a blind eye and what is that excuse for a manager that stomps around the office with her head down and fake hair. Look after your office babies! overpriced wine drinkin snobs. –You don't want to hear it!

More talk of a stadium and a CFL franchise. That's what this city is missing! Maybe they can dismantle the Convention centre and use old bridge parts to build a stadium on the cheap. And call the team the Halifax Boondoggles. —Taxed out

To all the teachers: don't go along with the latest contract offer. You're being sold down the river by your own executive and if you go along with it then you'll just end up taking every other public sector worker with you. This government is a sack of poison laying waste to everything it touches. Have no further dealings with them except through arbitration. —I hate the Liberal government
