2b Theatre Company Presents: The Russian Play & Mexico City
When: Nov. 29-Dec. 4, 8 p.m. 2011
2b Theatre’s double bill of The Russian Play and Mexico City is not-to-be-missed theatre. The combination of Hannah Moscovitch’s sharp-as-a-blade writing, Christian Barry’s elegant sound and lighting design and direction, and some truly delicious performances makes for an exquisite and exciting evening. Mexico City is a brief two-hander that stars Anthony Black and Tessa Cameron as two uptight travelers who have an epiphany in Mexico. It’s an amusing and appropriate appetizer before the rich main course. The Russian Play is both funny and very dark (Just like Russia, its narrator would probably say). The stony narrator is played by Colombe Demers who also morphs into several characters as she tells her sad tale, including the starry-eyed young lover Sonja and the gossipy old shop keeper. This is a performance that the phrase “tour-de-force” was surely coined for. –Kate Watson
