An Evening Out with Wit's End Theatre

There’s a new theatre company in town whose mandate is to make you laugh and, judging by the opening shows, it’s doing a fine job. Wit’s End Theatre’s productions of David Ives’ short and clever Sure Thing and Christopher Durang’s disturbingly delightful Titanic are an inspired pairing that makes for lots of laughter. Sure Thing is like a mini Ground Hog Day, where an impromptu conversation in a cafe takes many routes, each signaled by the ding of a bell, towards a happy ending. Rory MacLellan and Elizabeth Johnston are simply charming in this warm and witty work. Titanic is a different kettle of fish and is definitely not farce for the faint-hearted, dealing as it does with incestuous family relationships aboard a doomed vessel. Though that may not sound hilarious or even palatable, I confess that I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard in the theatre. –Kate Watson
