Be My Baby

When Dartmouth Players did Be My Baby in 2011, I called it “charming, funny and downright heartwarming,” and my view on the play hasn’t changed. The Festival Antigonish production touched me and made me laugh. The plot is a little far-fetched: an, impulsive young couple (Kelin Boyd and Nicholas Cox, who exude youthful passion) decide to adopt a baby but must deputize their long-suffering guardians, John Campbell and Maud Kinch, to bring the child from the US to Scotland. The hitch is that John and Maud, played by real-life couple Ed Thomason and Shelley Thompson, don’t get along at all. Watching them fall in love (as they inevitably do) with each other and with the baby is delightful. Also delightful is the economy of sets and clever choreography used to in the many scene changes. —Kate Watson
