Centuries of silence: The discovery of the Salzinnes Antiphonal

In 1550s Belgium, nuns scrawled hymns and scraps of daily life in choir books—but none as beautifully, perhaps, as the nameless writer who crafted the large-scale, vellum book known as the Salzinnes Antiphonal. Thought to have travelled to Halifax in the luggage of an Archbishop, the then-unidentified piece was discovered at Saint Mary’s University library in 1998. Now, finally cleaned up and ready for its debut, the book arrives at the AGNS to show off its curly script and gilded trim.
