Diane Landry: The Defibrillators

Quebec artist Diane Landry’s work takes inspiration from everyday materials, using common objects as raw material for her sculptures and installations. Curator Eve-Lyne Beaudry calls this process the transformation into “truly poetic forces.” Beaudry continues to describe Landry’s work, saying, “In response to our humdrum routines and increasingly hectic lives, she [Landry] constructs what I like to call ‘defibrillators’---the setting in motion of domestic objects…achieved by the electric current that imbues them with the very breath of life.” In “I can’t find my watch, yet it hasn’t flown away”, Landry automates salad spinners to project inkjet photographs in what plays like a mini cinema; in “Flying School”, she attaches umbrellas to motor-driven accordions that “breathe” (play music) with the opening and closing of each lit umbrella (pictured above). Movement and the passage of time are just as important to Landry’s work as everyday objects, and you can see Landry personally at Saturday's reception from 7-9pm. –Holly Gordon
