Yang Hong: Focus and Transition

Yang Hong’s Focus and Transition helps put life in perspective. The artist uses his abstract spotted paintings as a metaphor for a life that is adjusted and always changing. His colourful work is mystical and almost hypnotic. In “Number 4: Green Flecks,” the bright green spots stick out of from the reds and blues. In “Number 7: Floating Green,” the white background gives the illusion of branches against lime green and baby blue spots. Many of the works feature an array of light pastels such as “Number 9: Pink and Blue” which has the classic baby pink and blue with a touch of neutral yellow. It’s easy to get lost in the optical illusions. In “Number 2: Speckled Pink” the greens, dark blues and white look like gumdrops. Yum. —Julie Sobowale
